Alesis PlayMate Guitarist could be much better

First, let me say I only use the CD part of this- I do not use the FX processor. The CD player 'resets' itself after a few minutes. What I mean is, if you pause it, work on a part, or explain a piece of music (as i do, i am a guitar teacher), then a few minutes later, the CD player goes back to the beginning of the song. It doesn't 'hold the paused spot'. When I sent an email to Alesis about this, they said it was a design function to preserve the laser (!?!). I have CD players that are still functioning from the 1980s that will remained paused for days, and then play perfectly fine from the paused part. Lately also, it either freezes (no buttons work), or it doesn't recognize CDs unless you turn it off and then on again.

I will say, when it works, it is great. I wish they offered an mp3 player that did all this, or a cheaper CD player without the FX processor built in. But it better be a CD player that can be paused for awhile...and will last.

I've had this for a couple of years and still love it!loop option great for learning and practicing riffs.I too have the occasional problem of cd not playing and sent several back before deciding they all must do this (musicians friend has great customer service I did this at no cost and without ever leaving home!!)and decided to keep it anyway,IT'S EASILY FIXED BY FOLLOWING THE MANUAL'S RESET INSTRUCTIONS.the sound quality and ease of use so outweighs simular product I tried its worth this small hassle.If you want to plug in and play all night without keeping the family/neighbors up this is a great product for you!!many fun and usable effects!

I purchased the PlayMate in early January. I own a Tascam Guitar trainer, but it wasn't very user friendly. A friend told me about the Alesis model. It worked great for a couple of days and then it refused to read any disk I tried to play. My friend has the same problem with his. If you contact Alesis, they give you the address of the company does their repairs. You have to ship by Fed Ex or UPS. It cost me $** to ship it UPS. The repair company informed me that it will keep the player for at least 2 weeks. This is now what my friend is about to go through. If you are interested in spending $*** for something that seems to have a consistent design flaw, this is the thing for you.

Best thing about this is that there is a knob or button for every feature. You don't need the manual except to edit effects or set loop points. It can do everything that the Tascam CD-GT1 MKII does except for center-cancel. It can simultaneously transpose key, adjust tempo and fine-tune pitch - and there are knobs to continuously adjust all this. Sound quality of slow tempo is good enough for practice and transcription. There are knobs to adjust volume and CD/guitar mix. Built-in power supply is another great feature. These are the reasons I bought this instead of the Tascam. Haven't tried adjusting the built-in effects - I typically just use the Dark Jazz or Bright Jazz presets or simply bypass the effects. Only drawback, if any, is that this unit is a bit on the bulky side.
