Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound - powerful, clean, open sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. The down side for many players is that they also sound cold, have limited dynamics and run out of headroom when played hard. And of course, they need batteries. In 2006 DiMarzio took a close look at the most popular active neck and bridge humbuckers to see if they could capture all of the good qualities and eliminate the disadvantages. The D Activator neck and bridge models are the result. They have the same loud yet clean sound, as players of active humbuckers are familiar with, and killer harmonics. They also respond instantly to hard or light pick attack. In a word, they rock. And they don't need batteries.

Recommended For: Neck. Can also be used in bridge position

Tech Talk: There's a big difference between a pickup that sounds bright and one that sounds thin. A thin-sounding pickup will be brittle on the highest frets and empty sounding in the mids and lows. The D Activator neck model doesn't do this both the wound and plain strings remain tight and bright up the neck, and very well balanced. This allows the D Activator neck model to function well in both longer scale bolt-ons and shorter scale, set-neck guitars. It also makes for a good bridge pickup if you want a sound with a lot of snap and power. Like all passive pickups, D Activators require controls with a minimum value of 250Kohms. 500K is the standard all around value, and our 1Megohm tone control is best for long cable runs.

After alot of research and listening to pick ups, I went with the D Activators. Had a tech install the DP219 and DP220 in an '05 Epi LP Custom. These pups are rediculous!! I couldn't believe the HUGE difference in tone and output... Unreal! Bare in mind, Stock pots, etc. Just the pups. If you're looking for a righteous tone and a HUGE boost in your git. These are badboys! Like some of the other reviews, The DP219 absolutely wailz!! No mods, No stupid 9volt battery, none of that garbage. Just straight DiMarzio power!!

I refitted all of my guitars with the D-Activator Pickup sets. The tones are just too good.

This particular neck pickup is deep in tone but not overly warm and mellow as not to be mistaken for anything less than a Metal / Rock style pickup. Every tap of the pick hitting the strings is heard but the tone produced is just amazing. Definately worth the buy. I'm impressed.

Just had bridge and neck D-activators installed and they rock. I typically just play in the bridge position but my luthier recommended putting both in and I am glad he did. I know love playing in the neck position too. You can hear every note in every chord even with a ton of distortion. So cool! These pickups also change dramatically when you adjust your guitars volume knob which is awesome. You can really clean up the sound by lowering the volume just a bit. Gives a great 70's rock sound that way and you don't have to touch your amp or pedals. I put these in my Ibanez S520EX and now it rocks. I couldn't be happier. Thanks Guitar Center and Dimarzio! I am playing more and better than ever.

I've had the neck version of the D Activator installed a few months longer than I've had the bridge version. The neck version doesn't get muddy in that position and definitely stays that way up the entire neck. A big tone with a balanced treble. I've gotta say people -- this pickup is great for solos both blues-y and fast and aggressive! The clean tone is good, but used in tandem with the bridge D Activator... Whew! A treat to hear! Go out and buy 'em now!
