John Petrucci has had a lot of recent experience playing the D Sonic on his 6-string guitars, so when he wanted the same sound from his 7-string, DiMarzio couldn't say no. The D Sonic combination of clean and heavy that works so well with high-gain amps for both chords and soloing makes a great choice for a 7-string bridge pickup. The DP706 guitar pickup is recommended for bridge position.

As with the 6-string D Sonic, the character of the sound can be altered by reversing the installation direction. This can be particularly important because of the effect it will have on the low B string. With the solid bar polepiece towards the neck, the low B will be fat and heavy. With the bar towards the bridge, the sound will be tighter with more attack. The solid bar coil is also warmer-sounding, so two different single-coil sounds are available with coil-splitting.

It took me a while to install it into my Ibanez RG7321 but it was worth it. At first I put it with the bar facing the neck and after restringing my guitar I didn

D Sonic Lethality

Forget EMGs you have all the sonic destruction you'll need right here! This pu is boss, I put the rail toward the bridge in my Ibanez 7321 and I was amazed at the difference. Definition is off the charts. The clarity of the highs and the sustain is like having actives without the sterile bland active sound. The lows are heavy and super tight. Buy it and you won't regret it.

D Sonic Forever!!

The Dimarzio D Sonic gets the ABSOLUTE BEST ratings from me because it truly stands apart from any stock production model pickup as well as the rest of the Dimarzio line. I have a few guitars with either stock pickups or other Dimarzio offerings but whenever I play my guitar with the D Sonic installed the tone quality sounds so deep and rich. As you can see from the Dimarzio tone chart, the pickup is well balanced in all phases. But it really excels in clarity if you like to down tune heavily. It's no gimmick. I often wonder why people aren't mentioning it as much as I do, but if you like to play down tuned music, then this pickup should be the obvious choice. It can make a less expensive import guitar sound GREAT. So you can imagine what it would do for a custom shop guitar. The problems associated with down tuning such as lack of definition and muddy or flabby sounding bottom end are quickly solved if you just use one of these. After you install one, I have no doubt you'll not find or hear anything that compares. The Dimarzio X2N would probably be the closest. Now go get heavy and and stay low!!
