Recommended for bridge position.

Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound. They're powerful, clean, open sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. This also fits the description of a great 7-string pickup, if the problems associated with active guitar pickups sterile sound and limited headroom could be eliminated. The DP719 D Activator 7 bridge model does just that. It has the same loud yet clean sound as the best active humbuckers, and killer harmonics. The low B string is all about attack, not mud. It responds instantly to hard or light picking. In a word, it rocks. No batteries required.

Tech Talk: Like the 6-string version, the bridge D Activator 7 has a very focused attack that hits the amp hard and makes it feel more powerful than it actually specs out to be. DiMarzio also wanted to avoid the limiting effect that can occur with active pickups when they are played hard. This bridge pickup is passive with a lot of headroom, and it responds quickly and accurately to changes in pick attack. A hard pick attack doesn't cause the signal to flatten out, and picking more softly or rolling the volume control down lets the sound clean up naturally. Like all passive pickups, DiMarzio's D Activators require controls with a minimum value of 250Kohms. 500K is the standard all around value, and our 1Megohm tone control is best for long cable runs.

Not as great as I hoped

I was using this pickup in my Schecter 007 Elite(Mahogany/Maple/Rosewood) for about a year as a replacement for the stock duncan designed bridge pickup. I have another 7 string with EMG's in it so I was interested to see how they compared. At first I was really impressed by the amount of punch the D Activator has. The attack seems much more focused than the EMG's probably because the dynamics are less compressed on a passive humbucker. However, after using this pickup for a while I begain to notice that it really lacks character. Its tone is concentrated around a very powerful punch but the sustain dies away way too quickly and holding notes for a long time is hard. When playing clean I found myself pressing so hard on the strings just to get notes out that my hand hurt(I've been playing 14 years so it's not like this is a normal issue for me). I ended up switching this pickup for a Duncan JB and I get all the sustain and character that I was missing plus punch and harmonics that are just as good as the D Activator can produce. I would say that the D Activator could be a good pickup if all you play is stuff like Meshuggah or Norma Jean (stuff that doesn't really require much more than speed and lots of gain). If you're comparing these to EMG's, I think EMG's have a better feel to them...way more sustain and versatility.
