The light in the display goes out shortly after buying it. Now the motor is bad in the wheel. It won't turn. For the money, it probably is o.k. in a studio but not road worthy.

It is not a best buy

I bought this for tunning my piano, the auto detecting does not work well, it gives me wrong note even I test against my Yamaha digital piano. Manu mode is good if I use external microphone, but it does not work on extreme frequence.

A great tool with a few issues

The Peterson 490-ST AutoStrobe Tuner with Stretch Tuning is an excellent tool for the musician to use at home. I am a violinist and I use it to check my pitch. I use a contact mike connected to the mic input on the front pane. The features I have used on it are the pre-programmed temperaments, octave shift, manual pitch selection, and enhanced (0.1 cent) tuning measurements. The strobe dial is brightly lit, and easy to read. It zeroes in on the note quickly, but not instantaneously. The accuracy is great! The carrying handle is adjustable and acts as a kind of stand to elevate the front panel for ease of viewing. There are a few disadvantages to this tuner. First, it's not very portable, so if you are taking it to a gig or transporting it from home to office and back, it gets to be a chore. It also makes a humming sound when operating--not a big complaint. The biggest problem I have is that at certain places in the octave it will not "read" the new pitch very quickly. I have to stop playing and let it "rest" for a second or two and then play the new note. This happens at the change of octave between B and C. It also does something similar if the second note is a fifth lower than the first, for example B going to E. It keeps reading the B, presumably because B is in the harmonic series of E and it's not reading the fundamental. Again, if I stop and wait a moment, and then play the E, it picks it up. Finally, the manual isn't as user-friendly as it could be. While these issues are frustrating at times, I would not go back to a "needle" tuner. My pitch has improved tremendously since I've started using this tuner, so I figure I've gotten my money's worth!
