The StroboFlip VS-F Virtual Strobe Tuner is a great addition to Peterson's line of multi-temperament tuners, offering easy-to-use functionality in a flexible new design. It uses Peterson's exclusive Virtual Strobe Technology to provide an instantaneous picture of musical pitch. It gives you a compact flip design, large bright LCD, and full user programmability. The StroboFlip is perfect for intonating guitars and basses as well as realtime intonation practice to improve performance and listening skills.

It features cent offset, FTS drop tuning, and tuning assistant and comes with tempered tuning presets, some of which have never before been included in a tuner. In addition to Peterson's proprietary GTR temperament, which sweetens a guitar's tuning, the VS-II adds BAS, which does the same for basses, plus E9 and C6 tempered presets for pedal steel and lap steel guitar. The StroboFlip also supports the Buzz Feiten tuning system. The Bass Shift feature allows for effortless tuning of acoustic or electric bass down to 2 octaves below a normally tuned low B on a string instrument.

Not as good as it could be

Guys, I actually was disappointed with this unit. For the price the quality could be better. I thought it would be good but it actually is less usable than a VU type tuner for 1/2 the price to me. I like to see where the note is at and how far it has to go to get to pitch. The digital strobe is something you have to get used to. It is either rolling flat or sharp and stops on pitch. Yes it slows when getting close but I like to see how close. You spend a lot of time going past pitch one way or another because it is difficult to see how far you need to go. It is all plastic which is generally ok but the face looks like thin printed mylar. Sorry for the bad review, it is just my opinion.

Best and Most Accurate Tuner

I'd been using the Boss TU-15 Tuner for several years, and had generally been pleased with its features, especially the presets for open tunings and the Accu-pitch function. But for intonation and super accurate tuning, I found it to be slightly lacking.

It costs big bucks, but the Peterson Strobo Flip is by far the most accurate tuner I've used. Highly Recommended.

It's Not You Father's Tuner

I have been using a BOSS TU-12H for tuning my guitars (Dreadought, Classical and a Line6 Variax Acsoustic 700). It works fine, but I always keep fiddling with the tuning afterwards, reworking the octaves and still not quite satisfied with the chords.

Along comes the Peterson StroboFlip VS-F and a whole new world of adventures in tuning has opened up to me!

First, the accuracy improvement is undeniable. The precision available in the StroboFlip is amazing. The BOSS, as good as it is, pales in comparison.

Second, Peterson is clearly a quality oriented company. The StroboFlip is very well made. It could, I think, be improved - slightly. The display is a low-resolution, low-contrast screen like those in graphing calculators. It would be nice if it had higher resolution and contrast, and could show a smoother, more distinct image of the virtual strobe disc. And the extreme test abbreviations required by the large pixels could be replaced by larger, more descriptive phrases. But these are really tiny nits to pick out and really do nothing to detract from the fundamental excellence of this device.

Third, and, for me, most importantly, playing with the alternate temperaments has illuminated a whole array of unimagined possibilities. This little guy has sent me off to amazon looking for more information about all this temperament hoopla. It never occurred to me that there was anything wrong with the way our instruments are tuned. I have now concluded that things are not as simple and wonderful as I thought. Modern tuning is not the ultimate solution to millennia of debate and experiment. In fact, it appears logical that it is actually the muddiest and least desirable of the available solutions. Great minds from Pythagoras to Bach have struggled with the question. I think it is probable that Bach knew full well about equal temperament, and simply dismissed it as musically irrelevant and unusable. Peterson's virtual tuners now make it practical to tune close to some of the more sophisticated and more harmonious temperaments. This could prove to be something of a musical revelation!

I am extremely happy that I spent the bucks to get this baby. It is worth every penny!

Pricey, but a good solid tuner

The StroboFlip is all about accuracy. If you are a "close enough for rock 'n roll" type tuner, then save your money and get a cheaper one. If you are interested in dead accurate tuning, this is the way to go. I play guitar, violin, mandolin and dulcimer, and this tuner handles them all easily and quickly. For setting the bridge and intonation on an archtop acoustic guitar, there is no better or faster device. I have other tuners, including Korg and Intellitouch, and while they are cheaper and smaller, they are certainly not better. Highly recommended.

So Much for Stroboscopes

3 months ago, I decided that I needed to enter the new digital age of cutting edge accuracy and replace my old Korg AT-12 Auto Chromatic Tuner (with analogue needle gauge) that I purchased in 1985. I first bought a Korg Tm-40 digital tuner and then, unimpressed, the Peterson Compact Virtual Strobe Tuner. Disappointingly, I did not find either of these two new technological wonders to be any more accurate, or easier to use, than my old needle gauge. In fact, I have gone back to using my old AT-12 - I just prefer it. I wonder if that is because it is a "virtual" strobe and not a real stroboscope?
