Pleasantly Surprised

I had read varying reviews about different types of bridge pins (TUSQ, ivory, bone, ebony, fossilized ostrich beak or whatever) and I figured I give one of them a try on my inexpensive solid top acoustic (Yamaha FG700s). I didn't change the strings out immediately, just slacked the low E string, replaced the plastic pin with the ebony pin and tuned it back up. Side by side string comparisons were noticeable: much deeper bass response and a slightly mellower tone, which I like. The biggest change I've noticed is how much more the body resonates with these pins installed. The vibration is greatly amplified - I can feel it against my ribcage as I play. I'm willing to bet that these pins would improve the tone of any guitar - Mitchell all the way up to Martin. Try them for yourself. If you don't like the sound (tone is highly subjective and very personal), you can always return them and go back to plastic.

I have an old Yamaha FG-110 red label that I wanted to spruce up a bit, I figured some new bridgepins would add a more elegant look and enhance the tone. They are better than I expected. The sound is definitely better the sustain is long the tone is ricker and fuller and the bass is punchier. Overall these are an easy, inexpensive, and attractive way to quickly enhance the tone of your acoustic guitar

Ok - so i'm poor. I've never owned an instrument with real ebony bridge pins - only the cheap cheesy plastic kind.

But when I needed some new ones, I decided to try these. I got two sets, one for a Fender DG-20 A/E and another for a Telecoustic. I was going to keep the old, unbroken plastic for emergency backup - but when I heard the difference, I just threw them away.

If you haven't heard/experienced the difference, you've got to try these. Beefier sound - more sustain - even on that crappy sounding Telecoustic!

They are a bit shorter and have more shallow grooves - but this did not cause me any problem. The end pin was too small around for my DG-20. Might go in with a little wood glue.

I could see how some people might have a problem with the shallow string groove but if your guitar has grooves in the bridge then they should work fine. I bought the pearl inlayed pins and the inlay on one of them wasnt completely round so its a good thing they put in an extra one. I bought these for my Taylor 110E which came with cheap plastic ones. The ones made by Taylor were cheaper but they say they are only for the 300 models and up...I didnt want to buy them and have them maybe not fit so I went with these. Overall I'm happy with them.

The price is right for a novice. These pins look a helluva lot better than plastic pins. I was really surprised at the tonal change. I'm ordering another set for my other accoustic. The groove was a tad shallow, a round file fixed that in a few seconds!
