The aggressive, high-gain sound of a metal legend. |
The Livewire Dave Mustaine Active Pickup Set's active preamp allows higher gain and more output without losing tonal response and feel. The resonant frequency of both the bridge and neck pickups are intentionally matched with an SH-4 JB humbucker and an SH-2N Jazz Model respectively, so you get all the benefits of an active pickup without sacrificing the famous Seymourized organic tone. Low noise, discrete Class A circuitry can be operated at up to 25 volts for extremely high headroom. Low-profile coil geometry allows high efficiency and enhanced dynamics. Black nickel-plated cover offers a pro look and minimizes tonal coloration. Great for classic rock, punk, garage, thrash, old school metal, nu-metal, black metal and other heavy rock and aggressive music styles. Includes all necessary mounting hardware, pots, jack, and battery clip.

Excellent Tone, PAINFUL Installation

I bought these to replace a pair of low-quality generic EMG passives in my Ibanez RG. And I must say, when all is said and done, that everything I want in a pickup is present in the Mustaine Livewires. The neck pickup is excellent for blues/jazz and doesn't push too hard. It also has great mids. The bridge pickup isn't the hottest active out there, but it has the cleanest representation of notes I've ever heard. Everything sustains and breaks up nicely, and they really accentuate pick attack and palm muting. Also, the harmonics are insane on the bridge. However, as has been said before, installation is an exercise in frustration. While I didn't actually install these myself, my tech commented on the painful install, which included sanding the plastic coating off of the pots to enable easier soldering, and additional modification of the guitar itself. He also noted that the solder points on these pickups are the smallest he's ever seen, thus making the actual soldering process that much more difficult. But all in all, the price is way too high for this set. I was fortunate enough to get these as a gift, and thus can't complain. But if you can afford both the price and the install, these pickups are amazing.

Great sounding, poor pots

These pickups replaced a pair of EMG's, and they sound amazing. They went in an ESP that originally had EMG passives, but they sound SOOO much better than my Viper 1000 Deluxe with 81/85's. The EMG distortion is definatly heavier and more unique, but I like the tonal variety that these livewires give. Sounds great distorted and AWESOME clean. Didn't know I could get that clear of tone out of actives. The Pots, however, were a bitch to solder and definatly did not impress me. The hardware provided with it wasn't the highest quality but these pickups more than make up for that. I am, however, still chasing electrical gremlins...mostly in the jack, but that could be my fault.

they look awesome but the pots have plastic backs making them very hard to solder melted one also not enough wire comes with them so buy some if you order these also no switch and only one 9v connector so if you want to wire them 18v you will have to get another one how do they sound don't know had to take it in the local repair shop he could not believe the plastic backed pots i expected more

These are some mean pups. For those of you that do not care for EMGs, these pickups will address all the issues you have. They are warm yet crisp and clear. Moreover, they respond EXTREMLY well to pick attack. I happen to like the EMG 81/60 combo I have in my '85 Reissue explorer but these came on my Dean Mustaine Angel of Deth and I cannot think of a bad thing to say about them. Seymour did an awesome job designing these. So, if you want the clarity and punch of active pickups but don't want the sterility and compression of EMGs, than look no further than these pups. Seymour just gave all those passive-pickup tone junkies the best of both worlds.
