You can use the Shadow Quick Mount Guitar to Midi Converter System with electric or acoustic steel string guitars as a MIDI controller with any MIDI synthesizer or sound with no programming or complex setup. It also provides access to any sequencer or computer with MIDI software for composing or printing sheet music. Mounts in seconds to the strap button and requires no modification or damage to the instrument. How it works: The analog signals of the strings are converted into electrical signals by the hex pickup. Then the analog circuitry buffers the signal and filters out the harmonics for digital pitch analysis. After filtering, the microprocessor determines the pitch played by measuring the time of one sinus vibration (half of the cycle) that is the shortest part of the note. This allows the SH 075 to make a positive analysis in a MAXIMUM of 2.5 vibrations. Far superior to products that can take up to 7 vibrations for analysis. As soon as the pitch is confirmed, the microprocessor instantly sends the information as a standard MIDI message (note and velocity) to any MIDI synthesizer, sequencer or computer.

No more 13-pin MIDI controller!

5 pin MIDI straight to the Laptop via MIDI to USB is now possible! I setup my rig with the dialpad mounted on the bottom strap button of my Epiphone LP. I was able to test the hex pickup by placing it 1mm below the strings next to the bridge. The dialpad needs calibration to adjust sensitivity for each string but tracks very well and faster than Roland GK3 which I tested as well.

My only beef is the fact that it does not come with the bridge mount the GK3 comes with, so I have to design a custom hex pickup mount mimicking the Roland GK3 bridge mount.

Also, the dialpad to hex pickup connection is too short - if this wire were longer, I would prefer to velcro the dialpad onto my wide strap instead, to keep the guitar from looking like a phone stuck on its face. So dropped quality to 4 for poor aesthetic design. technically it is the best tracking pickup as it needs only 2.5 oscillations of a string to pickup mono or poly mode compared to 7 to 12 oscillations required by other guitar to MIDI synth pickups which makes tracking way faster on the Shadow. Each string can have dedicated channel in mono mode so have different instrument assigned as a dedicated MIDI Channel. In poly mode, uses single MIDI channel. So 5 for features.

But this beats the heck out of being stuck to a 13 pin guitar synth! I can go from guitar to Ableton Live and assign VST sound banks of my choice directly and record into Ableton Live any instrument assigned as a VST soundbank without any other go-between except the Shadow breakout box, which allows normal MIDI out to synth or audio DAWs as well as guitar PUP analog out to amp so your guitar volume and tone can be output simultaneously.

This beats the heck out of Roland GK3 but must require professional hex pickup mounting on the guitar which I will get done soon.

It would be nice to have Shadow provide an adjustable height adaptor to mount the hex pickup with instead of putty like glue taped between mesh tape given the cost of this device! So dropped value to 3.5.
