Old-School Heavy Case... both good and bad

I own one case for my Spector ReBop 5 DLX EX Zebrawood and two for my Spector ReBop 5 DLX FM fretted and fretless models, and must say they're as sturdy as anything approaching an Anvil flight case. But that also comes with a price: weight (the case is far heavier than the bass it holds), size (while not the largest hardcase I've ever seen, it's up there) and cost: after Spector's across-the-board price increase on all their products, their cases are certainly within range of the "Next Generation" of "Softshell Cases" - Cases that through modern technology offer 90% of the protection of traditional hardshell cases with the ease-of-use of gigbags, such as lighter weight, multiple methods of carrying such as backpack-style, shoulder straps, or handles.

I had to purchase hardshell cases for all my top-quality basses, as my Significant Other is in a Doctoral Program and we've moved several times due to her studies and expect do several more, and I won't risk my instruments in the moving process. But were I not in that position, I would have certainly spent my money into the above modern Softshell cases, which have almost all of the positives of hardshell cases with very few of the negatives. Also, in general Spector seems a touch behind the times in offering hardshell cases when most high-end bass companies now offer a choice between several types of cases while Spector only has their lower-end gigbags and higher-end cases... and makes the Customer purchase them at pricepoints for basses that other companies give as part of the instrument sale.

With all the quality Stuart and company puts into their basses, you would think the same would go into the cases to protect them. I'm not saying it's all bad, but it could be better. The latches and hinges are relatively cheap and the case is basic chipboard with a foam interior. It's held together with glue and staples. It does it's job, but with the low to mediocre quality who knows how long it'll last.

The latches and hinges are VERY cheap. The latches on mine were bent in shipping. I bent them back into place with my finger. Can't imagine they will last very long. Other than the latches and hinges, a pretty generic case. Unless you must have a case that matches your guitar, there are better choices.

Piece of Garbage

This case is absolutely the worst case I have ever seen. I bought the case because my spector bass did not fit in my SBK freedom case. What a big mistake. Spector may make great bases but their cases are the worst.

This case is very nice, it is worth the price if you own a high-end bass. The construction of the case is very good and it has a nice interior.
