TASCAM's MP-GT1 is the first MP3 player designed for musicians. Based on the award-winning CD-GT1mkII, this fun mobile guitar trainer includes enough memory to store up to 240 songs. Guitar parts can be slowed down, looped and even eliminated to help you learn new riffs. Play back MP3s using Variable Speed Audition, which slows down the speed without changing the pitch, and sections can be seamlessly looped while practicing tricky passages. Songs can even be pitched up or down to match the tuning of your guitar, so you don't have to re-tune for every song.

The guitar input lets you rock along with thick overdrive and multi-effects, including a guitar canceler so you can play along with your favorite bands. A tuner, metronome, and rechargeable battery are also built-in. All of this is packed into an MP3 player smaller than a stomp box, so stuff it in your backpack, gig bag or back pocket and hit the road.

The MP-GT1 uses a high-speed USB connection to load up MP3s and charge the built-in battery. Zip through your MP3 collection using a data wheel, dedicated buttons and a graphical LCD display. A rechargeable 9-hour lithium ion battery is built into the unit, and an optional power supply is also available.

TASCAM MP-GT1 Portable MP3 Guitar Trainer Features:

  • 240-song memory capacity (based on average 4-minute MP3 encoded at 128kbps)
  • Variable Speed Audition changes the speed of the MP3 playback without changing the pitch
  • Pitch control in 1% steps so you don't have to re-tune
  • Seamless looping for practicing tricky passages

a good tool

It has rugged metal frame because you are going to drop eventually. It's easy to load mp3s from windows. The sounds are a not what you would want from a guitar processor but they work well for learning. I rarely use headphone with it. I usually run it into the CD input on my amp and play along. A little pricey but cheaper than lessons. I'm really more of a bassist so I have the bass trainer also.

I've had my unit for about 6 months now and have been quite satisfied. The only thing that I felt could have been designed better is the power switch, it's like a little combo-lock. Other than that it helps me learn licks I need for our worship band that I need to play. For the price, I doubt that there is anything else like it available. I'm glad they kept working on it from the CD version (which I own) I'm sure we'll see this continue. I can't wait to see what shape this will take in a few years.

I like it

This product has recieved mixed reviews, but I thought I'd take a chance on it. Man, I'm glad I did.

I live in an apartment and have always had to practice with the amp volume turned down low. Now I can practice the guitar with my favorite songs cranked up.

As an added benefit, I ordered a 3 foot guitar cable and installed a simple, self adhesive belt clip. No more cable tied to the amp. Now I'm free to walk around the room or sit anywhere while I play.

I've only had this for a couple of weeks, but I love it. It's definately taken my guitar playing up another level.

It's not an amp

Purchased this devise after playing with a friends CD version. This devise does exactly what it is advertised to do...Guitar Trainer. It's not an amp, or an IPOD, I did not expect it to be. Only complaint is it does not have an output feature that would allow it to be put inline with my amp. I love the tempo adjust while maintaining descent tone. Helped me through learning solos.

Great little learning tool

I got this little baby about six months ago. It's a great practice and learning tool. I've been using it to practice along with recordings of songs my band is working on - both originals that we've recorded in session and covers from CDs. I've also learned a few new tunes just for kicks with the slow-down feature. This makes picking up licks so much easier. The pitch adjustment for songs tuned down a half step is really helpful, too.

For those reviews complaining about the onboard effects, I'm a little surprised. Yes, the presets were pretty horrid, but with a little (really, very little) time making adjustments, I've got a handful of tones saved that I like just fine. Also, I use a pair of Sony studio monitor headphones - I have no problem with bass distorting on the unit, as others have reported.

I will say that the interface is a little clunky, especially if you are used to an ipod. The little button in the center of the click wheel will not do what you expect it to. But, once you get the hang of it, it is perfectly functional.
