TASCAM's MP-GT1 is the first MP3 player designed for musicians. Based on the award-winning CD-GT1mkII, this fun mobile guitar trainer includes enough memory to store up to 240 songs. Guitar parts can be slowed down, looped and even eliminated to help you learn new riffs. Play back MP3s using Variable Speed Audition, which slows down the speed without changing the pitch, and sections can be seamlessly looped while practicing tricky passages. Songs can even be pitched up or down to match the tuning of your guitar, so you don't have to re-tune for every song.

The guitar input lets you rock along with thick overdrive and multi-effects, including a guitar canceler so you can play along with your favorite bands. A tuner, metronome, and rechargeable battery are also built-in. All of this is packed into an MP3 player smaller than a stomp box, so stuff it in your backpack, gig bag or back pocket and hit the road.

The MP-GT1 uses a high-speed USB connection to load up MP3s and charge the built-in battery. Zip through your MP3 collection using a data wheel, dedicated buttons and a graphical LCD display. A rechargeable 9-hour lithium ion battery is built into the unit, and an optional power supply is also available.

TASCAM MP-GT1 Portable MP3 Guitar Trainer Features:

  • 240-song memory capacity (based on average 4-minute MP3 encoded at 128kbps)
  • Variable Speed Audition changes the speed of the MP3 playback without changing the pitch
  • Pitch control in 1% steps so you don't have to re-tune
  • Seamless looping for practicing tricky passages
  • High-impedance 1/4" guitar input
  • Guitar multi-effects include overdrive, distortion, delay, flange, reverb and more
  • Guitar Cancel effect eliminates the guitar part from the recorded song so you can play along
  • Built-in tuner, oscillator and metronome
  • 1/8" Headphone output
  • Built-in rechargeable battery with 9-hour reserve (rechargeable through USB port or optional power supply)
  • 128x64 graphic LCD display

Indespensable

I have found this device (Tascam MP-GT1 Guitar Trainer) to be indispensable to me for learning songs, although honestly I have found the build quality to be lacking - in fact, I have had several units break or die on me, but in each case found no other product that offers the same combination of features that make the MP-GT1 so useful for me (certainly not in such a portable and affordable package), and have continued to replace it by looking around for good deals. The three features that make it invaluable for me for learning songs for my various cover bands are: the ability to loop parts; the ability to slow down parts without changing the pitch, to learn those fast solos and runs (I don't care that much that the sound quality deteriorates when you slow it down, I'm just trying to pick out the notes); and the kicker (that a comparable IPhone or computer app doesn't have), the ability to feed my keyboard into it with a 1/4" cable, and listen to myself and the mp3 together in headphones - thus being able to work on my songs without keeping the wife and kids awake or just driving them crazy! Since I play keyboards and not guitar, I don't use or care about the effects section. They should market these machines to us keyboard players, they are just as useful or more for us than for our guitar-slinging brethren I think.

Great learning tool

I got an MP-GT1 a few months ago. I've been very happy with it. The slow-down feature is great for learning licks (if you slow down a lot, the music does get distorted, but I have a feeling that's more due to the lossy nature of MP3 encoding rather than the unit). The loop feature is great for practicing alone, or when you're getting an arrangement down with a band. The key-changing utility is great, too, since my band frequently plays songs a step or a step and a half down. The built-in guitar effects processor is not the best, but it works well enough to get the job done (I've even used it for practice when I forgot my pedal board). I have not hit the unit's capacity yet, and I've got a lot of songs on it. Managing the files on this device is easy to do from Windows. I have not had any problems creating or browsing folders and subfolders on this device.

It has rugged metal frame because you are going to drop eventually. It's easy to load mp3s from windows. The sounds are a not what you would want from a guitar processor but they work well for learning. I rarely use headphone with it. I usually run it into the CD input on my amp and play along. A little pricey but cheaper than lessons. I'm really more of a bassist so I have the bass trainer also.

I've had my unit for about 6 months now and have been quite satisfied. The only thing that I felt could have been designed better is the power switch, it's like a little combo-lock. Other than that it helps me learn licks I need for our worship band that I need to play. For the price, I doubt that there is anything else like it available. I'm glad they kept working on it from the CD version (which I own) I'm sure we'll see this continue. I can't wait to see what shape this will take in a few years.

I like it

This product has recieved mixed reviews, but I thought I'd take a chance on it. Man, I'm glad I did.

I live in an apartment and have always had to practice with the amp volume turned down low. Now I can practice the guitar with my favorite songs cranked up.

As an added benefit, I ordered a 3 foot guitar cable and installed a simple, self adhesive belt clip. No more cable tied to the amp. Now I'm free to walk around the room or sit anywhere while I play.

I've only had this for a couple of weeks, but I love it. It's definately taken my guitar playing up another level.
