Left-facing Right-facing With Mic, Left-facing With Mic, Right-facing

The Reflexion Filter 3.5 is a portable device for recording live sound sources with reduced room ambiance. It is an advanced composite wall which is positioned behind any microphone by means of a variable position stand clamp assembly which ships with the product. The main function is to help obtain a 'dry' vocal or instrument recording. This is especially useful in studios without proper acoustic treatment, but can also be used to help record takes in control rooms, where the performer also has to operate the recording device, or in rehearsal studios to reduce ambient noise.

The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency waveforms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy.

The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter.

The stand assembly is composed of a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position.

The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

It certainly does what it's supposed to but I would pay more for one made of some alloy that's not 50 lbs! Do not assume that you can put this thing on a simple mic stand, you need something that's cemented into your floor so it doesn't topple over and ruin your mic.

Simply Amazing!

I had a chance to use the SERF Reflexion 3.5 this past weekend. It works great in absolutely untreated rooms.

I would have given the product all 5's except it is very heavy, thus you'll need an especially strudy mic stand and will still have to weight the stand base. And, as their site advises, if you are going to be moving the Reflexon 3.5, keep the original box it comes in - there are a lot of parts that might be easily lost.

Doing voice overs for my living, I and am often on the road and have to create demos in hotel or motel rooms for prospective clients. This is the most amazing product I have ever seen.

I just got back home, and wanted to post my thoughts before ordering 2 of the mic filters. One for on the road and one for my home studio.

Does exactly what you'd assume it would do. Great for vocals. I upgraded my stand, because I read it was rather heavy, and still needed to support the base with two dumbbells. It's going to make your stand top-heavy to one side, so just be prepared for that. Definitely worth purchasing barring that minor inconvenience, though.

I purchased the Reflexion Filter to reduce the unwanted reverb effect we were experiencing in our study. The study is not sound treated, so anything I could get from the Reflexion would have been great. I'll tell you what, it made our jaws hit the floor. The vocals coming through our AKG C 414 B-XL II were absolutely incredible. For the most part, perfectly dry. You need to follow the instructions on mic placement within the Reflexion carefully, but it is not all hard to set up. Did require a weighted mic stand...but hey, all well worth the cost! I'd buy another in a heart beat!

Just got it a few days ago and I am very pleased to say the least.. Not using it on all the songs cause I already have a treated room and the vocals I've recorded still sound good but with this they definitely sound better so using it on the rest of the songs. very cool product if you have the money get it.
